eBay Vintage ABOVE LONDON Aerial Photography COFFEE TABLE BOOK Contents: INTRODUCTION-THE BIRD’S-EYE VIEW by ALISTAIR COOKE LONDON-ANCIENT AND MODERN BY RIVER INTO THE CITY THE CENTRAL CITY THE CITY-SOUTH AND WEST THE CITY-NORTH AND WEST FESTIVALS BY RIVER OUT OF THE CITY — Reader Reviews: 5.0 out of 5 stars London at its best, before the skyscrapers. I love the overhead views of so much of what makes London wonderful. And I even found my house in one of the photos! — 4.0 out of 5 stars “Fortunately modernised many times since … The aerial shots were made in 1978-79, so that many of them now have an historical value that will grow as the years go by. My review looks briefly at the chapters and what they include, and ends with a brief overall critique of the photos and the text. The book opens with a brief introduction from Alistair Cooke. Seven chapters follow. The first, “London Ancient and Modern”, cross-references some of Cameron’s photos with old prints, but not always as accurately as one would wish. Then the second chapter, “By River into the City”, takes us on an aerial journey from the Thames estuary at Tilbury into the heart of the city. There is no sign of the M25-to-be, merely the severed ends of the North and South Circular Roads at the Woolwich Ferry. We see the Thames Flood Barrier under construction, and Docklands is not as we now know it. At this time there was no London Eye, no Millennium Bridge, and no Sainsbury Wing to the National Gallery. The list is long. Chapter three, “The Central City”, opens with the Tower of London and closes with Westminster. We see the site of what will one day become the Globe Theatre. Indeed, so much of central London then seemed like a temporary car park awaiting redevelopment, and we learn that this was the time that the Post Office Tower was Britain’s tallest building. Chapter four looks south-west of central London, Lambeth Palace to Pimlico via Battersea, Kensington and Belgravia – even Gatwick! Of Chelsea’s Albert Bridge Cooke writes, “This daring innovation produced a rhythmic bounce which required troops to break steps when crossing it.” Sound familiar? The fifth chapter moves to the north-west, Piccadilly Circus to Highgate, via Harrow-on-the-hill, Kensal Green and Hampstead Heath. Cooke likens seedy Piccadilly Circus to seedy Times Square in New York City, but today neither locality can be described as “hubs of porn”. It is ironic too that Cooke wrote that, “The only landmark that can be seen from the embassy grounds [Winfield House in Regent’s Park, the home of the American ambassador] – and an ever-present reminder of the new power of Islam – is the minaret of the new Central Mosque …”. Chapter six, entitled “Festivals” looks from above at the great sporting events and venues: Wembley, Lord’s, Wimbledon, Henley, and Ascot amongst them. We arrived from the east, up the River Thames into the Pool of London; the final chapter takes us out of the city in the opposite direction, into the middle reaches of the Thames, from Kew Gardens to Marlow and beyond. There are 141 of Cameron’s photographs to view! That is a lot, and many of them are full-page A4+ size. Some photographs do not work, especially those taken at night, and those of St Paul’s are a little disappointing. Some photos are even incorrectly reversed, such as the shot of the blitzed St Paul’s and of Belgrave Square. And the Duke of York’s column that Cooke describes in the lower left corner of the photo of Admiralty Arch has been chopped out of the frame. But these are minor quibbles for what is a superb series of photographs, all produced on good quality glossy paper. Alistair Cooke often has a marvellous way with words, likening for instance the photo of Mayfair to a jigsaw puzzle: “Cut up … this page would tease the expertise of the nerve ends of the most knowledgeable Londoner.” His relaxed humour often rises to the surface, as when he writes about St Bart’s Hospital, that it was “founded in 1123, but fortunately modernised many times since.” And I smiled at his quote from the dependable Mark Twain: “In all this grave and beautiful land, I have encountered only one genuinely humorous idea: the Albert Memorial.” There is some sloppy writing, though, for example when Alistair Cooke writes that most of the crown jewels “dating to 1660 were enthusiastically melted down by Cromwell…” There are also errors, as when Cooke is confused on page 53 between Soho and Bloomsbury, and when he describes Syon House as being the home of the Dukes of Cumberland. Oops! And we must not forget that much of Cooke’s target audience was across the Atlantic, for whom he provides translations for such English terms as `blocks of flats’, `soccer’, and `caravan parks’. But overall, this is a quite stupendous book, valued now by me more for its historical value than for its aesthetical content: it is a world I once lived in and which continues to change all the more every year. — 5.0 out of 5 stars The flower of cities all… Robert Cameron and Alistair Cooke teamed up to produce a wonderful visual account of London in the late 20th century, a stunning piece that will serve as a guide for generations of what London was like during this period. I know archaeologists who would sell their souls for such a record of previous historical periods. But, the historic value of such a record is probably not the reason to have it. Cameron had produced similar books over San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Washington D.C., and Yosemite (perhaps more by now). Alistair Cooke (yes, the Masterpiece Theatre host and Letters from America commentator) convinced him to ‘…collaborate on a more challenging project: a new view of a capital city that has neither picturesque mountains nor the dependable climate of Cameron’s previous subjects, but one that offers as much variety and as many visible relics of centuries of history as any city on earth.’ The first plates show maps from the Middle Ages, and the same aerial view today, side by side: one can see some of the same streets and patterns, a bridge in the same location, but also (naturally) great differences. The pattern of Chelsea remains as a framework from the days of the Duke of Beaufort in some ways (including Cheyne Walk), and very different in others. A French drawing of St. James’ Park looks very familiar, with the difference being the absence of Admiralty Arch which helped transform the Mall into one of the great processional routes. Included is a drawing from the Victorian era that shows the then-new Palace of Westminster; four Frechmen proved the ability to use ballooning to scale new heights (alas, only one survived the ascent to 28,000 feet); in 1886 Wyllie and Brewer went up west of Westminster Abbey to make a drawing, including the smog in which London ‘luxuriated’ — as a sign of the energy and prosperity of the world’s first port and the capital of Empire. Juxtaposing an aerial view of St. Paul’s surrounded by bomb damage with the current view, the resilience of London can be seen. London has suffered destruction various times, and always bounced back. After the historical tour, the book takes a tour of London by the river Thames, then branches out into the Central City, the South and West, the North and West, and then follows the river out of the city into Windsor and countryside environments. One fun section include a collection of aerial views of festivals and ‘fun’ spots: the Oval, Wembley, Lords cricket ground, the Henley Regatta, Ascot, and, of course, Wimbeldon. Each series of photographs is accompanied by Cooke’s particularly witty and sometimes elegantly-scathing commentary (one can tell when he thinks that progress was not for the better), such as his commentary on the Wimbledon photographs: ‘There was a time when the All-England Lawn Tennis Club’s Wimbledon courts were surrounded by open meadows and a small enclosure for the nobs who owned automobiles. Today the area of car parks is greater than that of ‘the action’, and during the fortnight of the championship the cars desecrate the golf course in the adjoining Wimbledon Park.’ A fun and interesting book, one that is deserving of closer inspection. If you’ve ever been to London, this book will bring back memories and give a perspective that one rarely gets of the city. If you’ve never been to London, this will inspire you to plan your trip!
