Switzerland WWII Soldier Military Cover -Artillery Unit – Wittwer # ART 46 * Cancelled with the Official Feldpost CancelDuring each World War, the Swiss military mobilized to ensure that Switzerland would not become one of the participants. Since Swiss military service is compulsory for all men between the ages of 18 and 48, this inevitably created financial hardship for many of those called up for active duty. During each war, individual military units issued fundraising labels that could be placed on mail to indicate charitable support. Since those on active duty enjoyed free-franking privileges, they often placed these military stamps on their mail in lieu of regular postage. These stamps were duly cancelled by the field post offices. Different parts of a unit sometimes had their own stamps. Please Note: I have always listed Swiss Soldier stamps using the 1990 Sulser Catalogue numbers as this book has been around the longest and is recognized by most collectors of this material. However, the Sulder catalogue does not price the stamps on cover. The Wittwer Soldier Stamp Catalogue is the most recent book on these stamps published (2004) and covers are priced. I decided to use the Wittwer numbers for listing the covers as this saves me a lot of cross-referencing. I hope that doesn’t cause confusion for my customers. I have 4 to 500 of these covers to list over the next few months and as they rarely are offered on ebay, I hope they draw a lot of interest!
