You are bidding on one lot of 2 early British wood molding planes as pictured.Included are:— a John Green Number 2 hollow wood molding plane. It is marked “IOHN GREEN” and with owner “F H BERRY” on the front end, and “2” and owners “J PORTER” (bordered stamp) and BERRY again on the back end. Overall length is about a 32nd under 9-1/2″, and the iron is about .170″ in width at the sharp end. The iron is unmarked. The iron sits at about 55 degrees up from horizontal. — and a Benjamin Frogatt Number 3 round wood molding plane. It is marked “B FROGATT” and with owner “I LLEWELIN” (bordered stamp) on the front end, and with a faint “3” on the back end. Overall length is about a 32nd under 9-3/4″, and the iron is about .230″ in width at the sharp end. The iron is unmarked. The iron sits at about 49 degrees up from horizontal.John Green and his son (also John Green) made planes in York, England, from about 1765 to 1808. Benjamin Frogatt made planes in Birmingham, England, from 1760 until 1790. There was also a John Llewellin who make planes in Bristol, England, from 1834 to 1871, but probably not connected and the spelling of the name is one L different. Please see the book Goodman’s British Planemakers 4th Edition for more information about these makers. Condition of the John Green plane is very good, especially for a plane this old, except for a left to right bend at the throt if you sight down the profile. It has a variety of faint scratches and dings in the wood, some small chips along the lower edges, and some rust and waviness on the tail of the iron. Condition of the Benjamin Frogatt plane is good to very good, with more scratches and dings, some mushrooming of the back end from adjusting the iron, some small stains on the body, and again some rust and waviness on the tail of the iron. The body has a very slight left to right bend at the throat if you sight down the profile. The iron and the wedge appear to be original for both planes. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it’s not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20″ long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30″ long, because those longer packages won’t fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item.
